The Divine

Publication date: 31 August 2025

The second volume of Flesh and Parchment, ‘The Divine’, turns its gaze upward — and inward. These pages trace the shape of divinity in its many guises: as revelation, as rupture, as longing. The divine is not confined to the sacred; it slips into the profane, the ordinary, the broken. It arrives as vision, as silence, as ache.

This issue gathers poetry, essays, visual pieces, and experimental forms that wrestle with transcendence — or the absence of it. Some works seek communion; others demand reckoning. All speak in the language of devotion, doubt, and the mysteries that refuse to resolve.

I have only just began to push myself into writing creatively as it is something I have always dabbled in but never delved into, and this piece is something I have been working on for the open call that explores being unable to find solace in your rituals anymore, which is quite a haunting idea for me.

rae woods @out.of.the.woods.poetry

at time of writing, i'm rae, i'm 24. i ate a lot of paint as a child and i've been making stuff periodically ever since to in attempt to try and get it out. back then i was small. right now i'm not much bigger. in regard to the paint habit, don't worry about it. i believe in creating bad art until we can do the good kind, and the good kind until we can learn how to be bad again. we should do all of this simultaneously until the end of time and we realise it was all the same thing. i’ve started sharing my poems again. some are about me. others are about you. at least one is about jesus. everything, ever, is about finding our way out of the woods. maybe we're heading in the same direction. maybe we could walk each other home.
